The Inca Shaman’s Mesa

Added October 20th, 2012 to Uncategorized

The Inca shaman’s mesa or medicine body is a group of sacred stones or q’uiyas that serve as both as an anchor to the earth and as a gateway to the spirit world. A mesa’s capacity to hold power or energy is a function of the relationship between the shaman and pachamama. Shaman’s serve sacred experience with pachamama, and one of the ways they do this is through caring for their mesa. A shaman’s relationship with a mesa is an act of love. Like tending to any living being, it needs to be fed, purified, tended to in ayni, in right relationship. As a shaman’s relationship with their mesa grows their spiritual and emotional connection grows as well. The form of a mesa stone needs to be unified and complete. It is important that the stone is not be chipped or with pieces missing, as they must be capable of holding energy.Q’uiya stones are imprinted with information that a shaman learns to access as their knowledge and understanding of the q’uiya deepens.

A mesa is an expression of nature.  Each of the sacred stones are organically woven together to form a rich tapestry connecting pachamama, the shaman’s energetic body, and the spirit world. In order for the power, or capacity to hold energy to grow, not only does the shaman need to be in ayni with the q’uiyas. the q’uiya need to be balanced, aligned, and in harmony with each other. This dynamic relationship between q’uiya stones occurs either as a union of opposites balancing masculine and feminine energy, or through an alignment of similar energy. Mesas usually develop specific arrangements of stones so that energetically, everything is working together.

Q’uiya stones each have energetic vibration that resonates at a certain frequency depending on their natural qualities. For example, a q’uiya that holds the feminine energy of a lagoon hidden deep in an Amazon rain forest has a deeper and slower frequency than an q’uiya holding the powerful masculine energy of the wind. Although the energetic properties of these stones are very different they can complement each other in a way that brings strength, unity and added dimension. Energetically, a balanced mesa is similar to an orchestra. The energetic expression of the q’uiyas combined creates a symphony of power and wholeness.

The Andean Research Institute exists to support, embody, and initiate action based on the core principles of the Andean cultures. The wisdom of these exquisite cultures shows us how we can re-craft our engagement with the environment, with one another, and with all that is possible so we can craft a thriving future and live it now. We cannot afford to lose this priceless wisdom, and at ARI we are working hard to conserve and steward its application to life in Peru and around the world. There is a distinct difference between preserving the wisdom of an indigenous culture and keeping it alive and active in modern culture. A core theme of our work at ARI is to keep the vital wisdom of the Andean traditions alive and at work in the world today. People have often asked me if I mean that we’re working to be like the traditional culture, to live as they lived. The answer is ‘not quite’. Our forms of life in the modern world are new and more complex; the scale at which we live and need to problem solve is new. In other words, the form of a culture always changes. The wisdom base, however, is meant to live on and increase in depth and power, creating much more benefit than we realize is possible. The wisdom base that exists in indigenous cultures is human wisdom; it is our experiential knowledge and unique recording of the very principles of creation thriving that we’ve used age after age – until our modern age, that is. We tend to dismiss indigenous wisdom as primitive, perhaps interesting, but not really relevant for our world. Why would we throw away, or ‘forget’ or devalue all of that wisdom?

The wisdom base of the Andean traditions contains something magical and at the same time absolutely essential for us in the modern world. It contains a very pure expression of the basic principles of consciousness itself. In fact, the knowledge of the organizing principles held in the Andean traditions is one of the first and most elegant expressions of the physics of the universe that includes human consciousness. I tell my students that the Andean traditions have been holding this knowledge for us; they are gifting it to us now, because we are intended to be the stewards of this wisdom in our age. This wisdom shows us how to reclaim our capacity for collectivity, for universal love, for limitless creativity without waste. Don Manuel Quispe, a powerful altomesayoq and leader of the Q’ero nation in his lifetime, always said that we modern people have no choice but to allow ourselves to be reclaimed by the collective. In order to do this, we need to release to collective consciousness, and this is what the Andean traditions hold for us – the ‘manual’ on consciousness itself!

Over the next few months, we’ll be posting a series of blogs to share with you some of the principles and core teachings of the Andean traditions. Our hope is that you will be able to feel the teachings, that they will change your awareness, feed your imagination and your heart, and perhaps provide you with new visions of thriving in life.

An Encyclopedia of Shamanism, by Christina Pratt.

“The two-volume set, “An Encyclopedia of Shamanism,” is a gem. Christina does the “heavy lifting” by cross-culturally researching the various aspects of shamanism, providing it in an easy-to-use reference format. This is an important contribution to the existing body of shamanic literature. Christina’s first-hand knowledge developed through direct experience with shamanic initiation, ceremony, and practice has given her in depth understanding and accuracy in presenting the material – making it easily accessible to novices as well as valuable for more advanced students.  Well done!”

Entering the Veil between Ordinary and Non-ordinary Reality

Added October 6th, 2012 to Uncategorized

“What we need to do is allow magic to get hold of us is to banish doubts from our minds. One our doubts are banished anything is possible.” (C. Castaneda, “The power of Silence” in The Wheel of Time. 1998, p.276).

A number of years ago when I was studying painting and learning about composition, my favorite professor told me that to create interest in a painting you must create tension. He said that one way of creating tension is to give the viewer a hint of something they cannot see. A face with eyes subdued in shadow holds a viewer’s attention longer than a face where everything is obvious. It is even more interesting when the viewer’s eyes have to travel around the canvas to get to the point of interest. He said that it is an inherent human trait to want what we cannot have because we are curious, and this is what creates interest in a painting. At the time, I realized his statement contained a universal truth that was relevant to life in general. As I think back to our conversation, I realize that he was talking about the phenomenon of being drawn to the veil of the unknown.

Entering the veil between ordinary and non-ordinary reality is an engagement with the unconscious. It is something mysterious, always beyond our control, and slightly beyond our reach. It can be permeable at times and impenetrable at others. The veil is illusive; it is there once, and then, in the next minute, we are searching for it, reminding ourselves that it exists and trying to remember what it feels like. Being in the veil can feel strangely comfortable and familiar, like a long lost home one has found again in a dream. Other times the veil is confusing, disorienting, and perhaps even seductive as it takes the form of a web of illusion. These fluctuations occur because the veil is energy. It is alive and, like the unconscious, it is vast, intelligent, and alien.
